Hunted (2012)

“Way back in about 2010, I was working with Jo McLaren in Surrey, who was one of the top stunt women in this country. I was teaching her martial arts and the Keysi Fighting Method at that time. She was coming up to my academy in Stourbridge regularly each week. Out of the blue, she asked me what I would do in a certain scenario. I gathered it was a fight scene for a film, so we mapped it all out. A week later, she asked me again what I would do in another scenario, and we mapped out another fight. Within three or four weeks, she invited me down to London to help her on a TV series, which I later found out was called “Hunted.”

In London, I met Crispin Layfield, the stunt coordinator on that series, and Melissa George at Pineapple Studios. They arranged for me to co-chair and choreograph fight scenarios. This quickly built into a relationship where Jo and I coached Melissa at her flat and various studios, helping her with her fight work, which was quite gruelling.

I’ve always been fascinated with filmmaking and the process. I used to watch hundreds of films and the making-of features on DVDs or Blu-rays. While making “Hunted,” I met some incredible stunt people like Rick English, James Grogan, Mike Lambert and Dave Garrick. Rick English has gone on to work on major films like “Mission Impossible” and “The Batman” films. Mike Lambert is now a big stunt coordinator.

I also met Dave Sutcliffe, the health and safety guy on “Hunted,” nicknamed “Dangerous Dave.” We hit it off, and he filled me in with so much information about filming. Sharon Moran, the production manager, also taught me a lot about the filmmaking process.

One fascinating bit was filming a fight scene, for Hunted, by a canal and a bridge. They spent a couple of days dredging the canal to ensure safety for the stuntwoman diving into the water. It was incredible to see the process and the pile of things they pulled out of the canal.
Because I got on well with Crispin and Jo, they invited me to play a part in the show as an assassin going after Melissa. We ended up writing my own scene, which was quite spooky but great fun. My influences, like the Korean film “Oldboy,” played a big role in my work.
One funny incident happened when we arrived as assassins in big black cars. James Grogan, a practical joker, locked me in the back of a Lexus, trying to stress me out for my first acting scene. It was quite funny at the time.

I had a fantastic time on “Hunted,” and it introduced me to the world of film. Jo McLaren and Crispin Layfield have become great friends, and I’ve moved on to many other rewarding projects. Film and TV are passions in my life, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”
