My 4 year old Son has recently joined Rob Locks Academy after being highly recommended by my Brother and Niece who has been attending here for a while.
My Son loves the little dragons Karate, and already loves the instructors. They are all so good with all the children, creating a wonderful balance between having fun, learning, building confidence, fitness and good values. I love watching the class and seeing my Son blossom each week.
We would highly recommend Rob Locks Academy

I have been training with Rob for just over 3 years now. I’d always wanted to do martial arts and always had lots of respect for it but I’d never plucked up the courage to try.
My daughter started training with Rob and having taken her to lots of lessons I started to get to know a few people and how thought it was great just how welcoming and friendly the students and instructors were.
So, a few weeks before turning 40 I finally decided to take the plunge, and I’m so, so glad that I did.
I started off once per week with Muay Thai and absolutely fell in love with it. About 18 months later I decided to try my hand at karate, and instantly loved that too.
I’m now training 3-4 three times per week on average across both styles.
Aside from the obvious benefits of confidence and fitness (I have managed to lose and keep off over a stone and a half since starting) but I feel much healthier and am definitely fitter now than I was in my 30s (or at least it feels that way).
I genuinely can’t thank Rob and the whole team enough. If like me, you’ve always had a fascination with martial arts, I urge you to give it a try, I’m sure you’ll be glad you did.
My kids Ziggy and Eva have been training at Robs Locks for just over a year now. We joined there in a hope that they would build their confidence, self esteem and improve their discipline.
Rob alongside with the other instructors have been so amazing with my children and especially in getting them involved when they were at first shy and nervous. Rob has an amazing way with kids and his unique mix of sparing, drills and even games, teaches the kids the needed skills for martial arts.
The staff are always friendly and have lots of time for both the students and the parents.
You could not ask for a better more inclusive club to join.
I joined Rob Locks accademy for my then 5 year old son , I used to bring my then 7 year old along and she used to watch , she started begging me to join as well she was so taken by how nice the instructors were /are she even gave up her gymnastics class to do karate instead , my son stopped going as I felt he was a little young at the time but my daughter has excelled at karate and out of all I she clubs she’s attended , dance , gymnastics, swimming this is the one she’s succeeded in she try’s so hard and even practices at home . She’s just obtained her purple belt and always wants to achieve the next level !!! I’ve found the staff owners Rob and Lena to be very professional and friendly. From Charlotte Lillis
We came to Robs locks academy in search of an activity to help my daughter build esteem, confidence, respect, discipline and active listening. I can honestly say that this is hands down the best thing I have ever invested in for my daughter. There is a mix of games, exercises design to prepare children for defence and real life. Rob and the instructors are professional an so child centred an friendly. My daughter is more confident, happier, and doing well. Well worth the money. From Bobby
I started Karate at Rob Locks aged 4 and I have made lots of friends a I started training after watching my brother for a while. I was 6 when I had my first Karate and Thai boxing lesson and love both. Lots of girls train at the club and it’s lovely having friends out of school. I’m nearly 12 and have my 1st Dan Black in two martial arts. I love keeping fit, seeing my friends and seeing all the coaches. My Dad and brother also train at the club and we all try and be higher grades than each other! I’m currently beating the boys! From Libby
I started Karate at Rob Locks aged 4 and love it. When I was 5 I started Thai Boxing too. I’m nearly 10 now and have recently started JKD. I have made lots of friends and love training three or four times a week. Mom likes me training as it gets me off my xbox and keeps me fit. Rob and all the coaches are really friendly and make sure I always leave exhausted and sweaty! From Leo
We are so pleased we found such a great place for our two boys to train and learn karate. Rob Lock and all the team are so good at nurturing children to be the best they can be, have pride in what they achieve and persever when it gets harder (especially in the lead up preparation for the black belt grade). These are all great extra life skills that our children have benefitted from. We have two boys that are so different in their physical interests and abilities and both have been so well supported and encouraged.
Thank you all for all the hard work you put in, it means so much to all the children that attend.
Lindsay, Paul, Charlie and Jake
Owen joined Rob Locks at age 4, and now three years later he is a brown/yellow grade in Muay Thai and is loving it as much as did in those first few weeks. Rob and the other instructors are really friendly and engaging. They make learning fun whilst instilling the discipline required for the students to thrive. All of the staff are so welcoming and friendly, and really go above and beyond for their students. Thankyou all so much for providing Owen with a space to do what he loves, and an opportunity to keep active and burn off some of that energy. I am really proud he has continued with his training, and thank you all so much for everything you have done to teach and support him.
Rob Locks and team are absolutely amazing. My daughter started when she was 7 years old and she has learnt a lot through her 4 year journey. She started off as a shy and timid girl and is very confident now. I would highly recommend this team. My younger one will be joining karate too. Thanks for all your training and support.
I really like karate because it makes me happy. I like getting new belts and learning how to protect myself. I really like the instructors because they are kind and teach us how to protect ourselves. It’s really fun.
Eva
My two grandchildren Drew and Oliver have attended Rob Lock’s Academy since 2018. They have both learned new skills in 3 martial arts, gained a higher level of personal fitness, but have also learned the importance of stranger danger, respect towards others, kindness to all, and strength of character. What were once two shy young boys, are now full of character and confidence. Rob and his team of instructors use multiple training and tutoring techniques to bring out the very best in each and every individual student, whether this be a child or adult taking part in training sessions. Furthermore the administration staff are also available at the academy in person or via WhatsApp to answer any questions.I recommend Rob Locks Academy to both children and adults alike, to improve confidence, fitness while at the same time learning various martial arts ranging from Sankukai Karate, Muay Thai, and Jeet Kune Do.
Gabriella has n smashed her blue Thai boxing grading and Jacob is going for his purple They both work hard.
Gabriella is just 4 years old and the discipline and technique she has been taught is unbelievable she amazes me how far she has come already in less than 9 months attending Rob locks.
Jacob is 6 years old his technique and power and the ability to listen and learn through Thai is fantastic he absolutely loves coming and cant wait to do his purple grading
They both can wait to reach black belt in Muay Thai in the future The staff are all amazing and I wouldn’t want them to go anywhere else . Thank you Rob locks keep it up.
HAYDON FAMILY XX
Lucas had previously attended another martial arts class and although he was enthusiastic it didn’t hold his attention. Since starting at Rob Locks he’s progressed through his belts quickly, he loves his class and is excited to attend every week. As parents we have been made to feel welcome, we can see first hand just how much the instructors invest in the children. The classes are fun and varied, and the atmosphere is so friendly and the space itself is clean and smart. It’s a great club and we’d recommend it to anyone. From Lacie Mason
From Zaneta : Joining Rob Locks Martial Arts Academy is the best I have ever done for my Daughter Chanel and for myself . Both of us love the Muay Thai as that brings us closer ( no more attitude no more arguments)so am really appreciate for help I had from Rob Locks team . Chanel also loving Karate lessons she more confident about herself more happy and more powerful as she was.
From Chanel : I am really happy I can be part of Rob Locks Academy definitely I know how to protect my self and definitely I know what Respect is. Thank you so much xx
Instructors are excellent , really helpful, making us laugh and definitely making us work hard, but we all feel safe and welcome that’s is the best .
Totally recommend Rob Locks Academy.
My 5 year old son loves Rob Locks Karate. Staff are friendly and great with the kids, they make you feel welcome as soon as you walk in.
Not only are they learning to protect themselves, they are being taught respect and self discipline.
From Elizabeth Fitzer
Just want to say a big massive thank you to Rob lock and his amazing team both my boys joined just before lock down 2020 the help and support they give to my eldest child who has learning disabilities is outstanding they allways go above and beyond to make sure he is not felt left out or behind in the class highly recommended
Thanks from the Davies House hold xxx
I’d shopped around and had taster days at various locations for self defence and it shocked me how some studios would fluctuate their price depending on the level of the child. This really put me off until I found Rob Locks. Absolutely value for money as it’s one set fee and my son can attend as many classes as he wishes, currently four times a week. Initially I (mum) started doing this with my son and thoroughly enjoyed it. My son has been consistently coming for almost 2 years and loves it. Instructors are amazing and nurturing and accepting of all abilities and personalities. An excellent mixture of disciplined sessions and fun activities throughout the year. You won’t find this anywhere else. Only regret is not starting my son when he was much younger.
Would recommend 100% !! From Shabnam
Spencer joined Robs Muay Thai classes early last year and what a difference a year has made. Since day one the tutors have spent time building a relationship with my son and getting to know him to encourage his learning. When he lacks confidence they are there to cheer him on, make him laugh and help him to continue to learn and grow. His confidence as a result, is consistently growing and he loves his time in his lessons. Rob, Lena, Chloe, Abbie and Jack always go above and beyond and I cannot thank them enough! 🙌From Sophie
I asked my son Spencer (age 7) what he would say to someone who has never been to Robs before and who was thinking of joining… He responded…
“I really love it because they make me feel included and like I can do it if I put my mind to it” and if that’s not a testimonial I don’t know what is!!
Our son Ethan than has been coming to Rob Locks Martial Arts Academy for over 2 years and is now on his 3rd brown belt in Sankukai Karate. Through the whole teams exceptional teaching and guidance, his confidence has come on leaps and bounds! The enviorment is friendly, warm and welcoming for both students and parents. The classes are well structured and fun. All the instructors take the time and effort to help each child achieve their full potential. They not only learn self defence skills but also discipline, health and fitness, respect and friendship. I would highly recommend Rob Locks Academy to anyone
From Katherine Edwards
I joined Rob Locks Karate just after my 5th birthday.
From the very first session I loved it!
Rob is really friendly and helpful and always makes lessons really fun!
All the instructors are great!
I am now a black belt and look forward to going every week!
My little brother and Grandad have joined too! Karate is for all ages!
See you soon!
Reece Deeley
I love going to karate. It’s great fun! The instructors are kind and helpful and really good fun!
Zack Deeley
Both my boys do karate at Rob Locks. My eldest has been going now for 7 years and my youngest has been going for three years.
All the instructors are absolutely fantastic with the kids. They know how to get them focused and keep them focused.
The training is brilliant and really encourages the kids to train and to want to reach their next belt.
My youngest was very nervous when he first started but the instructors were so supportive and helped him find his confidence.
Thank you and Rob and all the team, keep up the good work!
Stacey Deeley
After seeing the fantastic training my grandsons Reece & Zack were having I got the urge to join at the age of 60.
After doing karate 30 years ago with a different club, Rob gave me the confidence to join his team.
I’m really enjoying being part of a great group.

Oliver started Karate at Rob Locks in October 2020 aged 5, he is a very enthusiastic and energetic boy, we wanted him to learn to channel his energy doing something physical and fun. Over the last 18 months he has grown in confidence and determination, and puts his all into working towards and gaining each level belt. He loves the instructors and how they encourage him to keep going and get better. He says “I like it when they teach him new moves and Japanese words”. He has also made some lovely likeminded friends. As a parent it’s wonderful to watch your child doing something they enjoy, while learning a great skill.

I trained at Rob Locks as an adult and wanted my children to also train with thr academy. My son joined Rob Locks academy when he was around 5 years old and has been training in karate for around 7 years. His sister now trains too. They have both developed in confidence, increased their coordination and levels of fitness. The classes are adapted to suit their age and skill. It is also great that you can attend on different days so its easier not to miss a session.
My boys attended a local martial arts class for 3-5yr olds and absolutely loved it. My eldest son then moved into the next group, a class with mixed ages and abilities and very little instruction, at 5yrs old my shy, nervous son was put in a headlock by a child twice his age and size. It took me 2 years to get him to try again. Then they started at Rob's, this would never be allowed to happen here. I cannot thank the team enough, the first time my son put his hand up to demonstrate a move I could have burst with pride. Rob and the team make classes fun, teach respect, discipline and values. What I love most is the emphasis is 100% on self defence, they are not encouraged to fight but are taught to protect themselves. I have lost count of the times they are told the first thing to do when faced with a violent situation is get away. Fighting is a last resort but I am confident that under the guidance of Rob and the team if my boys are ever put in that situation they will have the skills and confidence to defend themselves. You are all amazing, thankyou.
Sam had his first session at the Academy on the weekend of his 4th Birthday and this was the best thing we ever did! He was very nervous for the first few months but now has so much confidence and absolutely loves his training. Sam recently achieved his 1st Dan Black Belt after months of hard work and we couldn’t be more proud. We would like to say a massive Thank You to all the amazing team at Rob Locks Academy for your continued support over the last 3 years, here’s to many more.
from Sam, Becky and Kevin 😊
Our boys have been going to Rob Lock’s for 8 years since they were aged 4 and 6. From day one they were made to feel very welcome into the Rob Lock family. Rob and his team have taught them with discipline and humour. It is thanks to their high quality teaching that our boys have grown in confidence and have developed strong values. Our boys love the karate, Thai boxing and JKD classes and they have made lots of new friends.
Kind regards
Fazilah and Simon Twining
Harry started at Rob Locks Academy in 2020 age just 4. He said he wanted to be a ninja. Joe came along to a few sessions with Harry and joined shortly after.
Almost 6 years on, they are both enjoying being put through their paces in the senior black belt classes
.
Rob Locks Academy has helped both of them with their confidence, self-discipline and fitness whilst making some new friendships along the way.
Rob, Zoe and all the instructors are wonderful and have supported Joe and Harry in their journey to achieving their black belts.
3 years ago we thought of an activity for my son Nikolas because he came home from school every day with a lot of frustration! That's how I ended up at Rob Locks Academy, I chose Muay Thai for discipline and to regain his self-confidence. And it was the best decision🤗 I've been saying for a long time that I wanted to do it too but I didn't have the courage until 2 weeks ago. We feel like a family and I'm glad I got to meet everyone.
In 2013, my son Matt was just 4 years old. I was searching for an activity that would help build his confidence and coordination while giving him something he genuinely enjoyed and felt passionate about.
At the same time, I was recovering from life-saving surgery and had to rebuild my fitness from scratch.
Matt was incredibly shy and wouldn’t let go of my hand, so I found myself joining in too. To my surprise, I absolutely loved it.
As my strength and fitness grew, so did my passion for Muay Thai. Before long, I was training five days a week. Becoming an assistant instructor felt like a natural progression, and it’s something I truly love.
Matt went on to achieve his black grade, with a newborn Georgia cheering him on from the sidelines.
When the academy reopened after Covid, Georgia started training too. Muay Thai has been incredibly beneficial for her ASD and ADHD, and she’s now looking forward to taking her black grading next month.
A few years ago, my niece Lexi moved over from South Africa. Growing up in a family obsessed with Muay Thai, it was only a matter of time before she joined the academy! She says it gives her a real sense of achievement and something for herself outside of work.
Getting my 3rd Dan Black grade is an achievement I feel very proud of but the thing I love the most about is the people I have met through the academy. It’s a privilege to see the positive impact Muay Thai has on both children and adults passing through the club and to be a part of such a caring and inspirational team. I have learnt so much from Rob and Chris over the years, and Zoe and Scott are fantastic - and really have each member’s best interests at heart. There is so much depth through the rest of the coaches and each one brings something so valuable to the club.
Who would have thought that, 14 years after we first stepped through those doors, the academy would still be such a huge part of our lives? ❤️
Jacob and jess wanted to join Rob locks and its got a good reputation and follows a grading system that is recognised unlike there previous Karate dojo.
Jess is hoping one day she can become an Instructor.
Dorothy joined as she had seen how much fun her brother and sister has and im sure baby brother Jameson will be joining as soon as he's of age.
My children Sina and Sania joined Rob Locks academy a few months ago.
As a parent I was worried they'd come back from school and spend too much time on their phones and not get enough exercise.
I was recommend Rob Locks by a friend and have found it so helpful for my children.
🥊 Join our children’s Karate & Boxing Academy where the kids learn discipline, confidence, fitness, and self-defense while having fun and making new friends.
Nearly 10 years ago, Will started Muay Thai to helping him build confidence and self-discipline, and to help defend himself if ever needed, especially as we stepped into the reality that children aren’t always kind at school.
We always remember Rob saying to ‘Run from danger and only if you can’t, then defend yourself’.
What began as a small step has grown into something he truly loves, helping shape his confidence, resilience, and the person he is today.
He now enjoys his sessions even more as his cousins Lily-May and Joseph join in the fun!
Lily-May and Joseph joined after talking to their cousin Will who had been attending for sometime. Both have been committed to attending for 4 years now and have recently moved up into the same class as Will.
My sons Yahya and Ismail joined the academy to gain confidence and get strong aswell as learning self defence. I have seen alot of improvement and they have become more active. The boys enjoy coming karate as they find it has helped them as well as the instructors are really great with them and very engaging.
Toby started training in Karate at Rob Lock’s in 2024 after we moved from another club and he’s never looked back.
He also decided to start training in Muay Thai alongside Sankukai Karate and has now achieved purple grades in both arts.
After watching his older brother, Rowan asked to begin Karate at the start of 2025 and then I decided to join myself a few months later. We have both now achieved our orange belts in Karate and are training for green. I’ve found that my fitness level and general wellbeing have dramatically improved too, so every visit feels like an achievement.
The training methods, knowledge and overall quality at Robs is exceptionally good. Students aren’t tucked away in an inaccessible room, parents and family are present right there at the side of the mat and are actively encouraged to participate and support their kids.
Rob has a fantastic approach to training where both he and his team have a great sense of authority that teaches respect and confidence, but also combines it with lightheartedness and fun. He’s a great character and we love his sense of humour.
I find a lot of people have the misconception that martial arts is just about aggression and fighting, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
One of the most fundamental principles that Rob teaches is safety and the importance of avoiding conflict wherever possible, but also having the ability to defend yourself if you have to. Plus of course there is general respect for others, courtesy and self-confidence in all parts of life.
The countless years of training and experience from Rob and his team speak volumes. This is exactly how martial arts should be taught.
We have been with Rob Locks academy now for 9 years. My stepsons joshua and Jack started Muay Thai boxing and Karate at the age of 8 and 4. They originally started at Haden Hill leisure centre to keep fit, learn to defend themselves and to have fun.
Joshua stopped going to pursue swimming but once my son Leo was old enough he joined at the age of 4. Four years later, Joshua my step son wanted to come back and do thai boxing and it didnt take much persuading from Rob and Scott for me to join in too. Its great to have watched the boys learn, grow in confidence and have fun in their lessons. Its also great to be able to train with my stepsons and we look forward to training every week!
It’s really about family and friends. 🙂 Mihnea came to the karate club in November 2024 and was very warmly welcomed. He quickly settled in, showing confidence and enthusiasm from the start. He always comes to class with pleasure and already dreams about earning his black belt, even though there’s still some work to do!
Shortly after, his friend and partner in everything, Riley, joined him, just as enthusiastic and eager to do his best. And of course Rob is truly a role model for the two good friends.
Carina, Mihnea’s little sister joined after seeing and supporting her brother from the side of the classroom. Together with her dad, took the decision of joining and since then she loved coming.
Karate also became a lovely way for our little girls to spend time together through sport, and it’s been wonderful watching them grow side by side. 🥋
The girls all started around the same time and are close in age, one already a little feisty (Carina), another very focused on the sport and very keen to join from the start (Daria), and the chill one (Alexia), who sometimes looks more like a tiny ballerina in the middle of karate practice. 😄
It’s amazing to see their friendship, their different personalities, and how they encourage each other while learning confidence, focus, and discipline.
So proud of the little and the big team they’re becoming. 💛
A big thank you to the whole team who train them, guide them and always do their best for the kids. 👏
Liam and Kristen first attended Rob Lock's Academy 2018 at Haden Hill. I remember how friendly and welcoming the team first were. JNR instructor Joe in particular, spending time one on one with my children making their first experience attentive but more importantly fun, they were hooked from that point onwards.
Liam and Kristen were 9 & 7 at the time and the impact on their formative years has been massive, my only regret is I did not start them sooner. Overall fitness, behaviour & social skills have all improved massively during their 7 years of training.
The administrative side, initially Lena & now Zoe are super friendly and helpful. ALL the instructors are brilliant. There is a definite family feel to the Business.
Rob has a commanding but friendly manner welcoming to all and this filters down at every stage of his team. RLA is not just Martial Arts, Rob stresses the importance of punctuality, respect to one another, trust, integrity, proper uniform etc all basic life lessons to help children mature. Rob is obviously an expert in his field and has created a team around him to support his ethos.
I’d recommend training multiple times per week, it represents great value for money and ensures you progress effectively both in technique & fitness. My Son at one point was training 11 times a week in three disciplines, and now at 16 years old has his first job at the Academy.
Muay Thai improves fitness, strength and stamina massively. In contrast Sankukai Karate seems to focus more on technique and complex katas.
I love when my Son has been “beasted by Big Chris”, sounds terrible, but when your child finishes a lesson drenched in sweat, breathing heavy but with a beaming smile RLA are doing things right. Even my Daughter occasionally gets a sweat on!
Their current Black Belt class ranges from youngsters under ten years old to members in their sixties, all training in unison at a high level. This encapsulates RLA, everyone welcome
Thomas joined in 2022 after asking to join karate for a few months. He quickly took to it and was really motivated to achieve each new belt and is currently a Junior Black Belt.
I (Dad John) joined in 2023. I was reluctant at first, I had never done any martial arts and was quite unfit, but I could never find time time for the gym and I was taking Thomas anyway so decided to give it a go. I found everyone really welcoming and three years later I'm still loving it and I’m fitter than I've ever been. Older brother, Michael, also joined in 2023 after seeing how much Thomas and I enjoyed the classes, while our youngest William had to wait to be 4 to join, but started his karate journey in 2025!
Enya and Arun started Muay Thai over 2 years ago now. I wanted them to start some sort of self defence and fitness class and after the initial trial week we decided on Muay Thai. At first Arun was very reluctant to participate in the classes but after a few months he really started enjoying the lessons and thrived. He was definitely not as confident as his sister when he first started but I would say it is the other way around now!
They have both made some lovely friends along the way too. Their commitment has surprised me and they are always excited to work towards their next grades.
I started Karate and Thai boxing in October 2022. At that time, it was my 12-year-old son, Cameron, who had started just a month before. After seeing how well Cameron was doing after just four weeks, I decided I wanted to give it a try, as it was something I always wanted to do as a child but was never encouraged by my father to do. It was then I realised I had the potential to go far in martial arts, even though I started at the age of 33.
In May 2023, my son Leiland then started his journey in martial arts (on his 4th birthday!), and I believe that Karate and boxing have helped build his confidence, his discipline, and his attitude towards learning. Finally, my wife Laura joined in March 2024 to help herself get fitter and build her confidence, because she could see how much it was helping myself and Leiland and saw it as a way to better herself.
Joining Rob Lock’s Martial Arts Academy was one of the best decisions we have made as a family, and we will forever be grateful to Rob and all his team for what they have done for us
I signed my eldest son up for karate in 2019 when he was 7 years old to help with he’s anxiety and self confidence issue. In the years since I’ve seen he’s confidence grow and flourish in life as well as karate and couldn’t have been prouder when he graduated to black belt level.
Since then my younger son has joined the junior karate class and currently holds his first brown belt, he has a lot of fun in his lessons.
Last year my eldest asked to join the Mauy Thai classes and encouraged me to join up with him. I’ve been doing both Mauy Thai and karate myself now for a while which I really enjoy and my fitness levels have improved significantly, although I’m constantly reminded by my sons that they’re higher grades and better than me.😂
Our goal at Rob Locks Academy is to create a family friendly environment and through this we've seen our family groups grow and to celebrate we are going to do a 👨👩👧👧 FAMILY FRIDAY POST 👨👩👧👧 each week to honour these families
This is our first families testimonial:
When Hannah first stepped onto the mats in March 2013, we thought Karate would just be a fun confidence builder. We had no idea it would spark a full family tradition.
By 2015, Zoe jumped in also starting Muay Thai inspired by her big sister’s focus and enthusiasm. Then in 2016, Dad (James) joined the fun too bringing even more energy to training nights and diving into Muay Thai as well.
In 2019, Lara decided it was her turn, stepping in with determination and just the right amount of sibling rivalry.
And in 2020, Hayley completed the lineup, officially making Karate and Muay Thai something we all share, love, and look forward to together.
What began with one brave girl trying something new has grown into a family passion that keeps us active, connected, and incredibly proud of one another. Martial Arts isn’t just part of our routine, it’s part of who we are.
